As a photographer, I believe it’s really important to show different types of images, and talk about why I make the kinds of wedding images I do. Weddings are indeed super special occasions, and it’s amazing to share a day like that with the people that mean the most to you. I spend a lot of time throughout the day taking and making portraits of everyone aside from the bride and groom ~ moms, dads, uncles, friends. I want these to be great, classic looking, semi-formal, images that show the style and personality of the people as I see them. I know my clients love all these images because they always include a ton of them in their albums :) People buy these images from my webshop all the time, and I love seeing these printed. But, I do it for them, the guests, the extended family, and everyone looking great and feeling great that day.

These are a few guest portrait images that I love, and show what kind of moments I look for.

I love to get the whole family in the frame so you can see and feel all those characters at once.

A great portrait should almost take itself. By that I mean the character and personality of the people must come across immediately, and I love this look.

Just details to create a feeling of really being there.

Adventure Sessions are great opputunties for clients to get to know me, and me to know them. People often mention that the brides in my images look so relaxed, and natural, and great, and I love hearing that. The next thing usually after that is.. “there is no way I’m going to look that good, I’m nervous in front of the camera”. The adventure session is a way for me to show my couples how I create these images that look and feel easy, cool, effortless, and amazing. It’s really good to know that on their wedding day they won’t be thinking about how to work the camera, they can just chill, and remember to use a few tips from the session that help make sure they always look A+ throughout the day.

On Bride and Groom portraits ~ often times on the wedding day there is very little time for portraits. Maybe 45 minutes. Most of the time even less. I’ve had to adapt the way I shoot over the years to be very fast, efficient, and make the most of every spot and resource available to me: understand light, shade, body posing, and most importantly: getting great expressions out of people. How can I capture a full set of wedding portraits in such a short amount of time? We rock n’ roll and keep it fun. These images aren’t just bride and groom portraits, but more a vibe of the kind of moments I love to capture.

5-minute wedding portraits all day

I love this timeless and classic look. It’s really important to pull the right expression out of the client.

An unexpected entrance changes alllll the energy in the room. This is actually shot in the Toronto mayor’s office.

Classic with a touch of weird. That’s my favourite combination.

If I can capture layers, one moment overlapping another, I’m a happy man. Busy frames like this attract the eyes and attention.

Party times are always fun to document. I’m never shy to get in there.

I love rooms like this and always capture a scene or two before it fills up and gets busy. I like the visual contrast between quiet times and busy times.

A little camera shake and allll that blur makes frames like this feel very intimate and less digital.

Twins, oh my. You know I’m going to setup portraits of this everywhere weird, all-day.

Dark rooms…. I need to make my own light, all the time. All that flash is off-camera, without that flash the whole scene is unusable. Clients don’t think about this, but this is what photographers do, take something, add what we need to it, and bam.

This bridal portrait at Evermore Almonte was super windy, sometimes you gotta take what mother nature gives you and run with it.

Some photographers go crazy for interiors, the plates, the details, and I do think that it’s important, but persoanlly, I like to capture it like this. Less sharp and fancy, more personality, vibe, and energy.

It was fun to bring a roll of seamless for this wedding. It’s more a reference to classic days, only we’re at a farm, and it’s 11pm.

Again, apparently, some people think I’m funny.

Again, I believe it’s 100% better to take 5 minutes with the couple throughout the day instead of stealing them for an hour after the ceremony. You’ll find much more variety in the images at the end of the day.

This frame is pure gold for me. Medium format film . classic black and white, square. Also, the groom seems to be opening up and showing this slight vulnerablity which really helps make this moment special.

I love dyptics because of the way you can contrast two different images together.

even if you have no light, you can find something dramatic to frame up.

Just a formal portrait, but taken in between shots, while someone ran out to get something. I keep my focus, and wait for these tiny things, you’ll find the best expressions in these moments.

Take an empty room, add couple, position them in the most flattering light, somewhere to get some direction, et voila ~
